Chief Gary J. Olsen started his law enforcement career with the Brielle Police Department in May of 1991. He began as a Police Dispatcher and in 1992 he served as a Class II, Special Police Officer. In 1996 he advanced to the position of Patrolman and served in the Patrol Division in that capacity. In 1997 he organized and implemented the Department’s first Police Canine Unit and remained as a canine handler until December 2004. Also, during this time he served as a Drug Recognition Expert, Terminal Agency Coordinator as well as the Department’s liaison to its Regional Domestic Violence Response Team.
In 2012, he was promoted to the rank of Sergeant and remained in the Patrol Division. In 2014, Chief Olsen was appointed as the Department’s Accreditation Manager. In this capacity, he restructured and re-implemented all of the police department’s Policies and Procedures, Rules & Regulations, and Training criteria, according to the standards set forth by the New Jersey State Association of Chiefs of Police. Later in 2014, he was instrumental in re-instituting the Department’s Canine Unit.
In December 2016, he was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant where he served as the Department’s Patrol Commander and Training officer and then in November 2018, he was promoted to the rank of Captain.
Chief Olsen is a graduate of the Monmouth County Police Academy. He has attended and successfully completed the New Jersey State Association of State Chiefs of Police, West Point Command, and Leadership Training Course.
In September 2018, Chief Olsen successfully completed and graduated from the FBI National Academy, Session 273, in Quantico, Virginia. The National Academy is a ten-week advanced leadership and physical fitness training program for selected officers having proven records as leaders and professionals within their agencies. Less than 1 percent of all law enforcement officers worldwide, receive the honor and privilege of being chosen to attend.
On January 7th, 2019, Chief Olsen was appointed and sworn in as Chief of Police of the Brielle Police Department.
